Carrollton Streetcar Barn
(Click thumbnails for full-size photos)
In November 2000, I had the wonderful privilege of being given a personal tour
of
the Carrollton Streetcar Barn where the St. Charles Ave. streetcars were
maintained
by its then supervisor Elmer von Dullen. Mr. von Dullen, an expert engineer
in streetcar
construction and maintenance, retired in July 2006 after 54 years;
however, the
streetcars continue to be maintained at the Willow Street facility.

Much to my surprise James Guilbeau,
author of The Saint Charles Streetcar
or the history of The New Orleans and
Carrollton Railroad, happened to pop-in!
I had recently purchased his book that
he signed for me several months earlier :-)

Built in 1896, it is the only
rail maintenance car remaining.
It's job is to sand the rails to
improve traction.
